History
Life and Mission Ministry was founded in 1990, immediately after the political changes of 1989. It is one of the first Christian organizations in modern Poland. It is a continuation of evangelistic and discipleship ministry in operation for more than twenty years behind the Iron Curtain.
In 1974, in the Silesia region of Poland a strong group of Christian students started to meet regularly, sharing their dreams and visions of the future of Poland. Their main focus was to promote a lifestyle that is shaped by the teachings of Jesus. The leading goal was to reach as many people as possible, with no regard of age nor background, with the message that Christ is the source of meaning and redemption for every person.
This dream, inspired by Henryk Wieja, became reality throughministry involvement initially of just a few students. Over the next few years the group grew to about 350 co-laborers, revealing also many talented leaders. Gradually, they took on various leadership roles in ministry all over the country.
During the communist years these young people operated under the auspices of the Lutheran Church. Regular gatherings and youth conferences were initiated. Together with friends and co-workers Henryk Wieja transformed the Lutheran conference under the name of the Evangelistic Week in Dzięgielów into an interdenominational, mass evangelistic event. Starting in 1983, the conferencesunder the leadership of Henryk and Alina Wieja developedrapidly, engaging such speakers as Samuel Kamaleson, George Verwer, Ravi Zacharias, Luis Palau, Leighton Ford, Stuart Briscoe, Tony Campolo and many more. The Polish leaders witnessed thousands of people receive Christ as their personal Savior, while also gaining valuable experience in ministry.
The beginning of democracy in Poland brought new possibilities for ministry. May 11, 1990 in Warsaw marks the official establishment of Life and Mission Ministry. It enabled the activities to continue, but also to develop a new organizational structure. Becoming an independent institution recognized by law allowed for staff employment, enlarge the extent of impact, and create new forms of ministry action.
At first, the headquarters of Life and Mission Ministry were located in rented space. Since 1995 the ministry has been the owner of a building, renovated thanks to many benefactors. The buildingincludes office spaceand meeting rooms suitable for children, youth, and adults.
The philosophy expressed in the name of the ministry points to life devoted to Jesus. To achieve the goals of the ministry, various departments were created:
- Kids Evangelistic Mission,
- Youth Mission,
- Woman to Woman Ministry,
- Couples Ministry,
- Yearly Bible Course,
- Prison Ministry,
- Foreign Evangelistic Mission,
- Training in Christian Apologetics,
- Christian Counseling Institute,
- Leaders Conferences in Międzyświeć,
- Christian School of Drama, Dance and Mime,
- Koinonia Publishing House,
- ‘Our Inspirations’ magazine.
After handing over the leadership of the Evangelical Week in Dzięgielów to the Center for Mission and Evangelization of the Lutheran Church, a need immersed for a new type of conference – to equip Christian leaders. In years 1995-2000 in Międzyświeć, five conferences took place for Christian leaders and their families.
Over the years some of the departments of Life and Mission Ministry, outgrowing their structural allocation, became independent sister-ministries. The Foreign Evangelistic Mission has become autonomous under the name of Biblical Mission Society in 1995. Established in 1991, the Prison Ministry became the Christian Resocialization Society ‘FILEO’ in 1998. Since 2003 the Kids Evangelistic Mission continues its work as the Christian Society ‘Love Education Maturity’. Lastly, in 2006 the Christian School of Drama also went independent. All these autonomous ministries support and cooperate with one another.
The present development strategy of the ministry focuses on training and equipping leaders and personsinvolved in the church as well as in the society. This includes training and educational courses in Christian counseling and mentoring, enhanced by published materials– promotingliterature that motivates a deeper a relationship with God and helps put biblical truths into practical areas of an everyday life.
